FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Garden Structure

What type of lumber is the garden made of?

Heart grade redwood - a high quality lumber that is ideal for damp environments, such as garden beds. We also offer plastic lumber. Although it is more expensive it will outlast natural lumber.

Is the lumber treated?

The exterior redwood boards are stained and sealed to provide protection from the sun. The inside lumber boards that touch the soil are not treated, so the garden can be organic.

What's the benefit of the 20" high beds as opposed to the 12" high beds?

With 20" high beds, there's no stooping! You can grow terrific vegetables with 12" or 20" high beds. However, with the higher beds, some of the vegetables will grow larger due to the extra space for the roots.

Are custom sizes available?

Yes, although we don't make any gardens smaller than the standard models, the 8'x8' and 8'x12' styles of gardens can be made larger. Our fencing and raised bed sections come in lengths of 6' and 8'. So, the garden sides can be any multiple of 6 or 8. For example, 8'x16', 8'x18', 8'x24', 12' x 16', 12'x18', 12'x24', etc. The larger gardens are suitable for schools, senior homes, or any place where a group of people will be sharing the garden. Our largest standard model, the 8'x12' garden, is suitable for households with up to six people.

Does the garden come with a warranty?

Yes, all gardens come with a one-year warranty against defects in materials or workmanship.

Assembly

Does the installation require digging?

No, the entire garden sits on the surface.

Can the garden be moved?

Yes, it can be disassembled and re-assembled.

Can the garden be built on concrete or asphalt?

Yes, so long as the garden area is level. However, because the garden has a wire bottom, the soil may stain the surface and the moisture could cause cracking.

How long does it take to assemble a Garden To Gro?

Depending on the size of the garden, the assembly of the garden structure should take 2-4 hours. After the garden frame is assembled, the soil must be added. Filling the beds with soil can take as long as assembling the garden frame, or sometimes even longer.

Irrigation

How does the irrigation system work?

At the back corner of the garden, there is an irrigation unit that includes a battery- operated controller. A garden hose can be connected to the unit, or the hose adaptor can be removed so the irrigation unit can be tied into your existing irrigation system with piping. The controller assures consistent watering. When the timer turns on, water is disbursed throughout the raised beds through the soaker hose. You can also use the coil hose for occasional manual watering and for washing your hands.

Will my existing sprinkler system work for watering the garden?

Probably not. The garden will need its own watering zone. The needs of the garden are different from the needs of your grass or bushes. Plus, the garden requires a pressured water line. You will need to run the water from a main line or a hose bib/spigot.

Critters

What makes the garden gopher-proof?

The floor of the beds is covered with galvanized wire mesh.

What can be done about birds or animals that climb in the garden, such as raccoons or squirrels?

We recommend two products: Critter Ridder by Havahart and the ScareCrow by Contech. Critter Ridder is a non-toxic pepper powder. Sprinkle it around the perimeter of the garden and in the walkway. Use it proactively, once a month, before the critters discover your garden. The ScareCrow is a motion activated sprinkler. When it detects an animal, it releases a short, but startling burst of water. Place it in the rear corner of the garden bed. Combined, these two products should keep climbing and flying critters out of the garden.

Soil

How far down does the soil go?

The garden beds are designed to be filled with soil from the bottom to the brim. The 12" high beds have 12" of soil and the 20" high beds have 20" of soil.
